The protracted case between Maryam Sanda and the federal government at the Federal High Court in Maitama which has lasted for almost three years has ended with a guilty verdict being passed on the accused Maryam Sanda.

Maryam Sanda is the daughter of Maimuna Aliyu, the former Executive Director of Aso Savings and Loans Limited who was married to Bilyaminu Bello, the son of Haliru Bello, the former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a highly publicized marriage ceremony where the high and mighty of the Nigerian political and industrial circles were in attendance.

However, on the night of November 18, 2017, the accused was reported to have stabbed her husband to death after some domestic argument that got out of control.

After the sentence of death by hanging was passed on Maryam Sanda for killing her husband Bilyaminu Bello, a mild drama followed, after the passing of the judgment, Maryam Sands on hearing the judgment, immediately bolted from the dock, it took Court and prison officials to drag her back into the dock. This led to about five minutes stand down by the judge.

Soon after this, some women began to wail in the court, then Sanda’s mother attempted to go to the dock to console her daughter who was shouting “mummy, mummy”, but the judge ordered that she be taken away, the scene was heart rendering.

After Justice Yusuf Halliru, had finished passing the sentence, Maryam Sands began to wail, shouting “Inna lilahi Inna roji hun” while her lawyer and members of her family were trying fruitlessly to pacify her. This went on until she was taken away in a Nigerian prison vehicle to Suleja Correctional Centre where she will be remanded until she exhausts her rights to appeal.
