Gunmen Ambush Election Results, Kill Escort Policeman In Ogun

Along with other news of sorrow, tears and blood that have dogged the 2019 presidential election, Ogun State had a taste of this sordid occurrence, this is reported to have taken place at the little town of Eredo.

The report has it that after the activities of the day, INEC officials gathered the collated ballot papers and other voting materials for onward delivery to the Ilaro collation centre also in Ogun State, while on their way from Ipokia to Ilaro, unknown to them, an ambush had been set for the team of INEC officials at Eredo in Yewa South Local Government Area of the state.

As soon as they got to Eredo at about 8pm, the political thugs opened fire on the team, it was gathered that the thugs shot sporadically at the vehicle conveying the election results and other materials, a police corporal who was identified as Sunday Idoko was hit and he died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during the shooting. Sunday Idoko was detailed as the escort of the election results from Ipokia to the Ilaro collation centre in Ogun.

The election results of the House of Representatives for Ipokia/Yewa South Federal Constituency seat were being taken to Oronna Hall in Ilaro.

Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the report, in his capacity as the State Police Public Relations Officer, he said that the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had directed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Wale Abass, commence investigation into the matter. Mr Abimbola, vowed that the hoodlums would be brought to book, as the long arm of the law will reach them, he also assured Nigerians that Sunday Idoko did not die for nothing as the political thugs did not succeed in carting away the election results, he said that the results were intact.

Talking about Sunday Idolo’s death, the State Police Public Relations Officer said that

“The unfortunate incident happened on Sunday evening when he was escorting election results to Ilaro. The hoodlums laid ambush on the vehicle conveying the results.

“We are on the trail of the hoodlums and we are going to arrest them.”
